Presence Over Paperwork: Rethinking Why We Work, What We Chart, and How That Influences Connection with Our Patients, The System, & Ourselves

If you are like most frontline clinicians, you are drowning in a backlog of documentation and clinical inbox demands. Every day, we must balance the health of three patients:
- The Person Seeking Our Help
- The System
- Ourselves
Yet, number two almost always maintains the upper hand, making it much too easy to lose numbers one and three to the grind. But, what if there was another way.
What would it mean to you to walk out of the office most days of the month with all your notes signed in real time and no outstanding portal messages within 15 minutes of closing? What would it be like if your assigned MA or nurse could respond exactly as you would to common scenarios that clog up your inbox regularly? What would you do with all of your evening time or even downtime in clinic? Time away? Time with your family? Time without your family? A passion project? A new hobby? Some premium nothing? Surely you didn't dream of spending nights and weekends doing work during hours you're not being paid...
Please join us for an hour to reimagine what connected, technologically supported clinical practice could be. You don't need to be a manager to overcome the EHR burdens that keep you up all hours and working too many weekends. We promise.
Together, we’ll explore:
- The role of clarity and curiosity in burnout prevention and treatment.
- What a healthy therapeutic environment for the patient, the system, and yourself/your team means to you.
- How to let technology like generative AI improve connection, not consume it.
-
Practical strategies for reducing administrative redundancy and reclaiming time.
If you walk away with nothing else, we hope you have a renewed sense of why you chose to advance your practice, what you most want to influence over your career, and how possible it is to start knocking down the knuckleheaded stuff in your way.
Wesley Cook, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC is a Washington, DC–based primary care nurse practitioner, medical director, and consultant. He owns District Primary Care, a home-based geriatrics practice dedicated to tertiary and quaternary prevention for the District’s most vulnerable seniors. Dr. Cook also serves as an operations consultant and professional coach, helping practices and clinicians clarify objectives, streamline workflows, reduce administrative burden, and overcome the tyranny of metrics. We are too important not to be as good a steward of our own lives and well-being as we are of the patients we hold so dear. So, his work integrates technology with the human side of our practice to transform burnout into a blueprint for a practice and life rich with presence and connection.
