Boston Globe Highlights Debate Over Full Practice Authority

Posted on 12/27/2019 in State Legislative News

The NP SAVE Bill was featured today in the business section of the Boston Globe in an article by Priyanka Dayal McCluskey.

Opening with the story of psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Julia McDougal Ronconi, who testified for MCNP before the Joint Committee on Public Health, the article connects Nurse Practitioner full practice authority to increased access to care for underserved  and vulnerable populations, and casts our efforts in a favorable light.

The article highlighted inclusion of Full Practice Authority language in the Governor’s omnibus health care bill, the support of the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission and the strong legislative backing of the bill with 88 representatives and 29 senators as co-sponsors.

Mary Lou Sudders, Secretary of Health and Human Services for Massachusetts, was quoted in support of the bill, “It’s fair, it’s right, and it will increase access — which is what the governor’s health care bill is all about- I’ve seen no data to suggest the quality of care offered by nurses is anything other than excellent in other states.”

Presenting a balanced view of the debate, opposing opinions by the physician community were also included, but were offset by the broad support expressed by others interviewed in the article.

The MCNP team would like to thank all of our colleagues at O’Neill and Associates who work tirelessly on our behalf to secure media opportunities such as this article. Their efforts ensure that Full Practice Authority for Massachusetts’ Nurse Practitioners garners continued public attention.
