Formal Legislative Session Ends Without Passing NP Scope of Practice Legislation

Posted on 8/1/2018 in State Legislative News

For a variety of reasons, the Massachusetts State Legislature failed to put forth a compromise Healthcare reform bill before the formal session ended on 7/31/2018.

This means that the MCNP was unable to advance our language for Full Practice Authority for Nurse Practitioners in Massachusetts.

While we are incredibly disappointed by this outcome, we are grateful for the efforts of our members who advocated for our bill and to our lobbying team, legislative committee members and PAC who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and at the State House. We are confident that we pursued every available legislative opportunity and left no stone unturned in addressing our political challenges.

As echoed in the words of our lobbyist and former Massachusetts Speaker of the House, Tom Finneran, "It is important to remember that each branch recognized and embraced the legitimacy of our cause. They may have differed in their respective approaches, but the professional recognition has been unequivocally established."  We should not lose sight of this and how this progress will favorably impact our efforts moving forward.

As we contemplate what lies ahead, we will continue our organizational work so that we can remain a powerful professional voice for our patients and our members.

We thank you for your support and continued membership which is critical to this mission.
