Massachusetts Moves 1-Step Closer to Full Practice Authority for NPs

Posted on 12/23/2020

GREAT NEWS!
Yesterday afternoon, the Healthcare Conference Committee, Co-Chaired by Representative Ron Mariano and Senator Cindy Friedman, released a compromise healthcare bill that includes language for independent practice authority for Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialists and CRNAs who have at least 2-years of supervised prescriptive practice.

The MCNP is thrilled that after advocating for this legislation for more than eight years, we are nearly at the finish line of achieving our goal of full practice authority for Nurse Practitioners in Massachusetts!

WHAT’S NEXT?
The conference committee report is subject to final approval by the House and Senate before going to Governor Baker’s desk to be signed into law. It is important to note that at this point the bill is not subject to further changes by the legislature. We expect these last critical steps to happen in the coming days with a vote in the House and Senate as early as today.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
Once passed, regulations to enact the law will need to be put forth by the Board of Registration in Nursing and Department of Public Health. This will take place over the coming months, and we will keep you updated on this process.

Until these regulations are promulgated, Nurse Practitioners who have at least 2 years of supervised practice experience will remain exempt from prescriptive oversight while the Governor’s order suspending this during the COVID state of emergency remains in place.

THANK YOU!
With many thanks to be expressed in the days ahead, the MCNP would first like to THANK YOU, as an MCNP member - for your support, your donations, your time, and your effort in helping pass this important legislation.
As we all know, the primary beneficiaries of this victory are our patients and the residents across the Commonwealth. Eliminating our license restrictions will increase access to exceptional Nurse Practitioner care for some of the most vulnerable in our state.

We will keep you updated on any developments and let you know when our official celebration can begin.
