MA BORN Approves Emergency APRN Regulations

Posted on 6/12/2021

Earlier this week, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN) voted to approve emergency advanced practice nursing regulations that will prevent a gap in prescriptive authority for eligible nurse practitioners who have been prescribing without supervision under the 3/26/20 Executive Order that is set to expire on June 15th, 2021.

The emergency regulations went into effect on June 10th and are available for download at: https://www.mass.gov/doc/244-cmr-400-advanced-practice-registered-nursing-redline-emergency-amendments/download

These emergency regulations will remain in place until final regulations authorizing full practice authority are promulgated in the coming months.

There will be a public hearing and opportunity for comments and requests for changes before the final regulations are promulgated. MCNP is actively reviewing the emergency regulations with our regulatory counsel and is planning to submit testimony at this hearing.

For Nurse Practitioners eligible to engage in prescriptive practice without supervision, ware awaiting guidance from the BORN regarding the recommended process by which they will need to submit attestations that they have completed the minimum of two years of supervised practice by a Qualified Healthcare Professional.

We will share more information about this as it becomes available.

We would like to thank the members of the Board of Registration in Nursing for their efforts and for expediting this important work so that our patients can have uninterrupted access to NP care.
