Today, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) announced the recipients of their 2022 AANP State Awards for Excellence. Presented annually, these prestigious awards recognize outstanding achievements by nurse practitioners (NPs) who demonstrate excellence in clinical practice and NP advocates who have made a significant contribution toward increasing the awareness and recognition of NPs.

Congratulations to the Massachusetts recipients, Dr. Constance Flynn and MA House Speaker Ron Mariano.

2022 State Advocate Recipient, Representative Ronald J. Mariano has been a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives since 1991. He was elected Speaker of the House in December 2020 after serving as Majority Leader since 2011. As Speaker, his top priority is continuing to bolster the state’s COVID-19 pandemic response and position Massachusetts for sustainable, long-term economic recovery.

Throughout his career, Speaker Mariano has been a driving force behind groundbreaking legislation related to health care, criminal justice, gun control, and education. Serving as the House Chair of the Joint Committee on Financial Services, Speaker Mariano was a key architect of the Commonwealth’s landmark health care reform of 2006, which went on to serve as a model for the Affordable Care Act.

More recently, Speaker Mariano served as House Chair of the Healthcare Conference Committee, and recognizing the role of APRNs in responding to COVID-19, worked with his colleagues to reach consensus on scope of practice reform for APRNs, Under his leadership, Massachusetts passed legislation granting Full Practice Authority to Nurse Practitioners in January 2021, making it the 23rd state in the nation to do so.

2022 State Award for Excellence Recipient, Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Constance M. Flynn has dedicated her career to caring for patients with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and in 2017 established an inpatient Substance Use Disorder Consultant Service to assist in the management of SUD patients with concurrent medical conditions at Berkshire Medical Center.

As an expert clinician in SUD treatment, she has worked to increase access to Medication Assisted Treatment and offers hope to patients who have struggled with mental health and substance use disorders.  She is passionate about de-stigmatizing treatment for SUD - approaching this as a chronic disease and treating patients without judgement and with compassion and respect.

Dr. Flynn is an inspirational educator, role model and advocate for patients with SUD, providing education on SUD to nursing students, nursing staff, medical and psychiatric residents, hospitalists, psychiatrists, advanced practice providers and primary care providers. She has worked tirelessly to expand access to MAT for SUD and through her work with Boston Medical Center has provided Suboxone Waiver and various other related trainings to providers throughout Massachusetts.
